saturdays in december, part one

I can't believe that Christmas is almost here! Some years I feel like the month has just flown by and that we never quite got to do all that we intended on doing, but this year we've been busy every weekend enjoying the season and all the festivities and weather that goes with it.

A couple Saturdays ago the day started out with Gene helping the girls to build an igloo in our backyard. They made it tall enough that the girls could put their little table in it and sit down for an "Eskimo" lunch. Then we all got ready and traveled across town to a school for the Swedish community's Santa Lucia festival.

Given that I'm a full quarter Swedish (from my mother's father--who was full Swede) my mom has slowly started integrating the Swedish traditions and customs into our Christmas celebrations. Last year she gave us a book on how to have a Swedish Christmas with a tapestry of Tomten (the Swedish house gnome that is Santa's helper). So this year we made it to the Santa Lucia festival for the procession of light and star boys, songs, children's program and the Swedish feast! YAY for Swedish meatballs and lingonberries! (I could eat my weight in meatballs and lingonberries.) Oh. my. holy. heck. the pastries! To die for!

Children from the Swedish community dressed as Tomten and gingerbread men singing traditional Swedish songs.

The directors invited any children who wanted to dance around the Christmas tree to come up and Morgan wanted to join so Gene went with her. Cute!
